    日元最终来自汉语圆,瘾来自广东话烟瘾,鸦片瘾。清朝末年,外国商人因鸦片有利可图把大量鸦片运进中国毒害中国人,许多中国人吸鸦片成瘾,19世纪中期进入美国的华工中也不乏有烟瘾的人。yen一词就是汉语“烟瘾”(yenyin)中“瘾”(yin)字的讹用,20世纪初始用于美国英语。美国人很可能原想以“烟瘾”喻指“渴望”或“嗜好”,但却取错了字,把中国人的“瘾头”变成了英语中的“烟头”了。另有一种解释认为,yen系由yearn(渴望)或yearning(渴望)演变而来。
