今天这是个人所皆知的通用词。它是在18世纪出现的，从构词上来看，是由副词broad'abroad,widely’（四散地，广阔地）和动词cast的过去分词cast（被撒的）组合而成。最初broadcast只作形容词或副词用，表示“撒播的”或“用撒播的方式”，限用于播种。后多转用作动词，表示“撤播”，并进而引申出“散布”或“传播”一义。20世纪20年代初broadcast开始用于无线电信号的播送。这一单词用法的最早记录见于《发现》（Discovery）杂志1921年4月号一期上“The（radio）station at Poldhu is used partly for broadcasting Press and other massages to ships.”（波尔杜的无线电台部分用来向船只播送新闻和其他消息。）此后broadcast的原义渐遭废弃，今天引申义几乎已完全取代了原义。据此还衍生了telecast(电视广播television+（broad）cast），simulcast(联播simultaneous+（broad）cast），newscast(新闻广播，news+（broad）cast），sportscast/sportcast(播送体育节日，sport+（broad）cast）等缩合词。broad广+cast扔
