    从词源上来说，flour和flower本是一个词，拼写常混用，原先既指“花”也指“（谷物等磨成的）粉”。直到19世纪flour和flower在拼写上才有了正式区分，意义也才开始有了分工。例如，在Thomas Tryon所写的Wisdom's Dictates(1691)一书中可以找到“Milk,Water,and Flower”这样的短语，而在诗人弥尔顿（John Milton，1608-1674)的长诗《失乐园》（Paradise Lost）中则可以看到“O flours That never will in other climate grow.”这样的诗句。前者中的flower显然指“面粉”，而后者中的flour则显然指的是“花”。这和它们的今义恰恰相反。(参见flower）
